MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- With graduation season in full swing - a local college honored students for their milestone achievement.

Yesterday, May 28, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) held their spring graduation in the Cooley Auditorium.

The institute honored around 300 students for the completion of their respective programs.

These graduates were honored for earning their General Education Development certificates (GED), High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) and MATC Emerging Scholars.

Although the path to earning a degree may not be easy, guest speaker Lacreisha Whiters encourages graduates to always believe in themselves.

"We are our own biggest obstacles at times and one of the most important things I've learned in my journey is to quiet the voice in our own heads," she said. "Instead of asking 'why me? ask 'why not me?'"

MATC has offered "innovative education" programs to the Milwaukee area for over 100 years.
